Question for the Technically Minded

Does anyone have a good suggestion for what kind of mic I should buy to do this podcasting stuff?

I would like it to be a headset mic and it definitely needs noise cancellation because there's always either a fan or air-conditioning unit going where I am planning to record my stuff.

I don't mind forking out some money, but I don't want to deal with a mixer and everything. Just something nice and simple. It's not like I'm singing. :-)

Any advice you can offer would be most gratefully accepted.

Hi,
I can give you a little help. Any decent mic will do. However noise cancellation is a post production thing. You're better off getting clean sound. One way is to go under your bedcovers and use the blanket as a recording studio. It'll sound very good and professional. Under no circumstance record the sound of the AC running.
Hope this helps

The "Logitech labtec stereo 342" only costs around $12USD, but it's actually one of the best microphone headsets you can buy for voice quality below a hundred bucks.

I should mention that I had a research budget and chose the headset with labtec noise cancelling after evaluating a lot of high-end devices. My project ended up distributing those in volume to clients.

Logitech makes a very good for the money. Noise Canceling, USB connection for $39.99. You can find it at most Radio Shack's. It's the one I recommond to most folks. And Yes, I do work for "The Shack"

Talk to Helen Madden. She's very into podcasting right now.

Here's my two cents. Buy something not too expensive to start with. I got a USB mike from Logitec for around $30 and a set of Bose headphones for around $40. I don't know about a headset, I've never heard any recommendations on them, but if you want to avoid a mixer, then go USB. Don't invest a lot of money until you've done about five episodes. The general rule of thumb is that it takes five episodes to figure out what you're doing with a podcast, and to decide if you want to keep podcasting. If you want more specific info, contact Tee Morris - http://www.teemorris.com/contact/. He's a podcasting guru, and wrote Podcasting for Dummies and Advanced Podcasting for Dummies. I've met him and he's very nice and may have some recommendations for you.

I would argue very strongly AGAINST a headset microphone.

One, the microphone is very small and as a result it resonates more with the higher frequencies... it makes the sound very harsh. Second, you have a much harder time controlling the distance between microphone and mouth.

A microphone on a desk stand is much more controllable, AND you can use several extremely inexpensive tricks to limit popping P's and sibilant S's, both of which make you sound terrible.

My first microphone was a Samson Q1U and I loved it.

I've had excellent results with the Behringer USB Podcast kit. It contains a good mic, a nice little pre-amp, and all the software you need to sort out audio irregularities and such.

Podcasts of your stories really sound like an exciting option! Any directional mic which doesn't pick up too much noise from the side is OK. You could even use a mp3-recorder with a built-in microphone. If you do have access to Adobe Audition or similar software you can easily edit the recording afterwards to your preferences.
As for location, I would choose an environment which you find inspiring... a very special place. It could even be outdoors. Nothing wrong with a bit of background noise, especially if it bears some resemblance to the story.
I'm looking forward to hear the results. Good luck!

Thanks for all your recommendations. I did get a headset mic, because I really don't have a quiet place to sit and do this. Also, living in a world of fans and aircon, anything without a very close pattern is pretty well useless to me.

So, a headset it was. It's working okay, but I've got to remember to move it a little way from my mouth. Popping and essing is a problem.

Hugs,

rg
