I know people have a very negative view of academia and its ‘pomposity’ but I’ve found that there are many ways to ‘be’ an academic. I’m embarking on a doctorate, so the chances of not getting ‘snowed under’ by it are slim to none for the next three years, I’m afraid.

This is the game I have chosen to play. I submit to its rules. And like all responsible submissives, I understand the dimensions of this dungeon.

Please post your paper as soon as you deliver it. I would love to read it. And do not be snowed with academia. My experience is that pomposity abounds and there are only a few teachers who are really worth listening to. You have a fabulously critical mind and will sort them out very nicely.

Sounds like a fantastic conference! I think I need to start to conference fund for myself.

Also, I love this: “I think it’s important for us to see our writing as practice-based research.” It’s actually been through studying over the past year that I’ve come to the same conclusion. In fact I think all art (and many other professions/careers) could do with being given the term “practice”. Like Doctors, we are all practising our skills, and we should always strive to situate ourself within our genres and fields, and to continue to learn as we develop. Besides the benefits of that, it’s also the most fun I have ever had, and the most inspiring thing I’ve ever done.

Congratulations on your first academic conference! As an academic, I know they can be scary but get easier as you gain experience. The amount of ideas and stimulation obtained from interacting with peers can be wonderful. I’m glad you had a good experience. Love your writing.

If you look at the schedule and search the presenters on Google scholar, they’ve probably written other stuff on non-Western romance.
