I had read this story when you first posted it. What a joy to revisit your words. So many beautiful comments above. I will add my sadness at her inevitable realization that the only thing fixed is the helplessness we share as humans, destined to fall victim to our nature.

I adore the overlapping of the historical account and the present story. The narrator’s purpose revealed itself like a striptease.
